Printer stopped printing? Before calling a service center, check these 7 common causes — many are fixed in a few minutes, no tools and no cost.
1. Paper jam
The most common cause. Open the tray and covers, check the paper path carefully, and remove any stuck sheet by pulling gently in the normal feed direction, not backward.
2. Printer doesn’t recognize the cartridge
Remove the cartridge, check that the protective tape was fully removed, gently wipe the metal contacts with a dry cloth, and reinsert it firmly. If you’re using a compatible cartridge, also double-check the model is the exact match for your printer — a wrong model is the most common cause of this error.
3. Dirty or worn paper feed rollers
If the printer pulls several sheets at once or doesn’t grab paper at all, the pick-up roller may be worn smooth or coated with paper dust. Cleaning it with a slightly damp cloth often fixes it; if not, the roller needs replacing.
4. Outdated or corrupted driver
If the printer is connected but doesn’t respond to print commands, uninstall and reinstall the driver from the manufacturer’s official site. Windows updates can sometimes affect an existing driver.
5. Stuck print queue
A document stuck in the queue can block every print job after it. Open the Windows print queue, clear any pending documents, and restart the printer.
6. Dried ink in the printhead
If the printer sat unused for a few weeks, ink can dry in the nozzles. Run the head-cleaning function from the printer menu or driver — it usually resolves in 2-3 attempts.
7. Firmware blocking compatible cartridges
Some manufacturers release firmware updates that block non-original cartridges. If the printer worked fine and suddenly rejected a compatible cartridge after an automatic update, this is the most likely cause.
When to visit a service center
If you’ve checked all of the above and the printer still doesn’t work, the issue is likely hardware — a board, a sensor, or the fusing unit. In that case, a specialized service center can diagnose the exact faulty part instead of guessing what to buy.
